She was born in Holzhausen (Kr. Siegen), Lippe, Germany and baptized on 01 March 1840 in Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche, Hohenhausen, Lippe, Germany. Christine was confirmed in 1854 in the in Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche, Hohenhausen, Lippe, Germany. Marie Berneking (20) was working for the Diedr. C. Asche family and sailed from Bremen, Germany with them and Schwarze's on the "Hermine". They arrived at the Castle Garden Immigration Station, New York, 27 June 1861, destination - Freeport, Illinois. Her parents came about 14 months later in October, 1862. She married Herman Heinrich Steffen on 12 April 1862 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. They had a son, Karl Friedrich Herman Steffen, born 13 February 1863, in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. She lost her first husband, Herman (29 September 1863) and son, Karl (09 January 1864) within three months of each other. Christine remarried on 08 October 1864 to August F. Asche in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. They were on same ship "Hermine" coming to America in 1861. In 1881 they moved to Wellsburg, Grundy, Iowa. She was 84 when she died.
