HALE AND HEARTY NINETY-FOUR YEARS MRS. CATHERINE SCHWARZE STILL IN POssEssION OF HER FACULTIES FIVE GENERATIONS REPRESENTED IN THE ACCOMPANYING PICTURE One Hundred and Nine Direct Living Descendants a Record Which Is Difficult to Appreciate

  • Names of All Given "Freeport has long been a city distinguished and celebrated for many things. It is a name that will go down in history as a town where things happen. But the everyday occurrences, as a rule, go by unheeded and are little thought of until some day in the future when they are recalled by some incident. Living in our midst is a woman nearing the age of one hundred years who has the proud distinction of being able to hold in her arms a member of the fifth generation of her descendants. This estimable lady is Mrs. Catherine Schwarze. Some day during this month she will be ninety-four years old, but the exact day nobody knows. When one stops to think what her distinction means, he cannot help but wonder at the remarkable vitality of this old lady. A short time ago a son of hers died, and he was beyond the allotted three score and ten, and yet she lives and is hale and hearty. True, she is not possessed of the acute senses of a person forty years her junior, yet she is in good health and aside from a little deafness, she is in possession of all her faculties. This remarkable lady has a great great granddaughter and has one hundred and nine direct descendants living. She was the mother of a large family seven of whom are still living, and five are dead. She has forty-four grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Residence in Freeport, Mrs. Schwarze was born in Kaldorf, Lippe Detmold, Germany in the month of February 1814. Her maiden name was Catherine Rheinert. She was married in her native town seventy-five years ago. She with other members of her family emigrated to the United States in 1863. They came directly to Freeport and this city has been her home ever since. Her husband, Henry Schwarze was a tailor by trade and carried on that occupation until a few years before his death, which occurred about fifteen years ago. Coming to Freeport at an early age she has seen the city grow from a small and struggling village to a prosperous city that it is now. Many of the historic happenings are as fresh in her memory as though they happened but yesterday. She has been a member of St John's church ever since that congregation was first organized. She has seen the congregation grow from the straggling few to the present large and prosperous membership. She has at all times been an active worker in the welfare of the church. Her Descendants As states before she is the mother of twelve children. They are: Fred Schwarze, Mrs. C. Mensenkamp, Mrs. C. Tempel, Henry Schwarze, Mrs. Nettie Huenkemeier, A. C. Schwarze, Mrs. William Kanne, Mrs. Julia Wachlin, deceased, Simon Schwarze, deceased, and three others who died without issue. The descendants of the children and their descendants will be given in the order named above. Through her oldest son, Fred, is the fifth generation carried out. He was the father of ten children, nine of whom are married. His oldest daughter married Louis Schmertman, whose oldest daughter married Charles Kottman and their daughter
Infant Kottman is of the fifth generation. The other children of Fred Schwarze are: Fred Schwarze, Jr. six children Henry, three children Minnie, three children

KATHERINE SCHWARZE AT AGE OF NINETY- FIVE HERE SIXTY YEARS SEVERAL WELL-KNOWN FREEPORT PEOPLE ARE AMONG HER DESCENDANTS "Mrs. Katherine Schwarze, a resident of Freeport for the past sixty years and one of the most prominent women identified with the early history of the city, died at fifteen minutes past one o'clock this morning, after being confined to her bed for the past six weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nettie Huenkemeier, 325 Stephenson Street. Mrs. Schwarze was nearly ninety-five years of age, and her death is attributed to old senile decline. Mrs. Schwarze was affectionately known as "Grandma Schwarze" by almost all of the residents of this city. She was born Feb. 15, 1814 in Kaldorf, Lippe Detmold, Germany and came to this country when she was a young woman. About seventy-five years ago she was married to Henry Schwarze, who was one of the pioneer tailors of this city. Her maiden name was Miss Katherine Rheinert. During the years of residence in this city she was closely identified with all the developments of Freeport. Mrs. Schwarze was a woman of the hardy German type and was possessed of those marvelous physical powers that enabled her to withstand the infirmities of old age and maintain her mental faculties up to the very last hour of her life. By nature Mrs. Schwarze was a woman who was constituted to endure the hardships that came to the early settlers of this country sixty years ago, and up to the last days of her life she retained a very vivid recollection of all the incidents of the early life of the city. Mrs. Schwarze was a charter member of St. John's Evangelical Church, and during her lifetime she was devoted to its social and religious activities. She was an ardent Christian woman, and spent a goodly share of her life in ministering to the welfare of others. Her death while expected for some time is deeply regretted, for it removes one of the best and noblest women in the city. Decedent is survived by the following children: Frederic of Loran township, Henry of Bellingham, Wash., Mrs. H. Mensenkamp, Mrs. A. Tempel, August, and Mrs. Nettie Huenkemeier, all of this city, and Mrs. William Kanne of Davis. The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of Mrs. Huenkemeier, Rev. F Holke, pastor of St John's church will officiate. Interment will be in the city cemetery." Source: Freeport Daily Bulletin, Saturday, December 05, 1908.

HUENKEMEIER FACULTIES WELL PRESERVED UNTIL THE LAST - SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF DESCENDANTS "Mrs. Catherine Schwarze, venerable mother of Mrs. Nettie Huenkemeier, passed away this morning at 1:15 o'clock at the home of the latter 325 Stephenson Street, her demise being cause by old age and the infirmities attendant upon it. She had been confined to her bed for several weeks. Had she lived until February next, Mrs. Schwarze would have reached the age of 95 years. She was indeed a remarkable woman for one so advanced in years, retaining possession of all her faculties in her extreme age, remembering and relating occurrences of four score years ago as of they had only happened recently. She was a good conversationalist and delighted in the society of her friends. She was a native of Germany. Mrs. Schwarze was one of the oldest members of St. John's German Evangelical church, and during her younger years took an active part in the work of the congregation. Seven children survive her as follows: Fred Schwarze, of Loran Henry of Bellingham, Wash. August, Mrs. H. Mensenkamp, Mrs. A. Tempel, and Mrs. Nettie Huenkemeier, of Freeport, and Mrs. William Kanne, of Davis. The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, services to be conducted at the Huenkemeier home by Rev. F Holke, of St John's church, at that hour.
